Farewell to the Chief

Last Wednesday, as the Fighting Illini Men’s basketball team defeated Michigan, it was not only the last game for senior players. The University of Illinois retired its eighty-one year old Indian mascot, Chief Illiniwek, after much controversy and debate (as a side issue, does the name “Fighting Illini” stereotype Native Americans as overly aggressive warlords?)

If you have been to an Illinois game, you know the halftime routine. A white student dressed in Native American regalia dances around as the crowd cheers wildly. He portrays the fictitious chief of a tribe that was actually a confederacy (Kaskaskia, Cahokia, Peoria, Tamaroa, Moingwena, and Michigamea).

In 2005, the NCAA deemed the mascot an offensive use of American Indian imagery, and barred the University from hosting post-season events. As the University began losing money and exposure from these sanctions, they began to cave.

Needless to say, most student and community members were outraged. The Chief, they believe, stands for power, integrity, and honor. Many Native Americans agree. In 2002, a Peter Harris Research Group poll of those who declared Native American ethnicity on a U.S. census showed that 81% of Native Americans support the use of Indian nicknames in high school and college sports.

Regardless, The University of Illinois is a pubic institution and a place of higher learning. Have taxpayers been supporting institutionalized racism? On the other hand, in an era where Native Americans are forgotten citizens, isn’t the University honoring and calling a great amount of attention to their roots?

Put yourself on the line and tell us where you stand on the Chief.

The Chief is a time honored Illinois tradition ever since an annonymous frat boy ran out wearing the Sioux clothing and Apache headdress. For a blue state its rather impressive that Illinois held out this long.

Ok, time to sign my own death warrant.

i believe that since the intention was not to hurt anyone, the United States stands for nothing but free expression, and since the people who have a legitament claim against him are an extreme minority; The University of Illinois didnt HAVE to take the Chief away but they SHOULD have taken him away. Way to buckle.

In all seriousness when the only people who could be offended by a symbol are offended it is their right to challenge it.

the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

We must defend those that cannot defend themselves.

John,

A white kid inauthentically dancing around to a marching band playing the University fight song while a bunch of white college kids clap their hands and laugh. Some honor...

Is that what my taxes are going for? Buckle? More like come to their senses

They were'nt commiting a crime. I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure of this. Your tax dollars (which im not convinced you contribute) dont go to him. I think its actually funded by a frat. If im wrong i apologize.

regardless, the uniform i bet is as old as the original mascot and is probably the least of your worries as far as wasted funding.

As far as coming to one's senses, all the Indians (no they prefer indian not Native American for a number of reasons) I talk to, and thats a bunch actually dont really have a problem with it. For the most part its a minority of Indians within the Indian population that care.

Coming to ones senses. not the case.
but yes it was offensive so like everything offensive(this is sarcasm now) we must take it away because controversy is wrong.

John,

The mascot is paid for by the University (i.e. public/tax money). Do some research...it's not a frat thing

"All the Indians" you talk to???? Is this representative of the proud Native American culture????? What kind of source is that?

C'mon John. It's prejeducial, period. Just because Florida State does it, does that make it OK? Right move, just 83 years too late

You are taking this way too seriously bud.

you have to chill out.

I dont really care so you're not gonna get much of an argument out of me.

All I was saying is that
1. it was originally some guy who thought it would be cool(probably after a few "soda pops") and was embrased as a fan and wasnt meant to hurt anyone.
2.Its not exactly a huge financial investment. the guy does it for free
3. Primary sources are very good sources, especially these. One is a Vietnam veteran that grew up on the Cherokee reservation in Oklahoma, the other lived in the city his whole life, and the last one's father was a farmer and he left to go work in a bigger area.
-fairly diverse but no not entirely representative
4. the protests didnt start 83 years ago it was somewhere around 20-30 years

Those are my arguments.

Now go get another band-aid for your heart.

first off, Publius, come on man or lady i guess just chill we arnt greek or anything. The chief is a tradition and is not physically hurting anyone. If the tribes want the original headdress back give it back to them, but the dance and costume is just that, a dance and costume. It is tradition and with an increasing amount of people trying to be politically correct, the world seems to be becoming a bit boring. People should just relax and let tradition happen.
