McCain-in-the-tank?

In 1988, Presidential candidate Michael Dukakis had a problem. The United States was in the midst of the Cold War, and the Massachusetts Governor was viewed as being soft on defense, particularly on the controversial “Star Wars” program, which Dukakis promised to scale down. Dukasis was facing Vice President George H.W. Bush, the Vice President to the man many credited with winning the Cold War.

In response to this, Dukakis orchestrated what would become the key image of his campaign, albeit not for the reasons he intended. In September 1988, Dukakis visited the General Dynamics plant in Michigan to take part in a photo op in an M1 Abrams tank. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher of the United Kingdom had been photographed in a similar situation in 1986, riding in a Challenger tank while wearing a scarf; although somewhat out of character, the image was effective and helped Thatcher's re-election prospects. Dukakis's "tank moment" was much less successful. Footage of Dukakis was used in television ads by the Bush campaign, as evidence that Dukakis would not make a good commander-in-chief, and "Dukakis in the tank" remains shorthand for backfired public relations outings.

Two decades later, Senator and presidential aspirant John McCain has the opposite problem that Dukakis had in 1988. McCain is tied to what most Americans believe to be a failed policy of Iraq. McCain supported the “surge” of troops several months ago, causing Democrats to coin the phrase “McCain Doctrine” when refereeing to the Presidents ambitions in the region. McCain believes that victory is within reach, and that Iraqi society has benefited tremendously from the U.S. occupation.

On April 1st, McCain and Republican colleague Lindsay Graham strolled through Baghdad’s Shorja market. Protected by more than a hundred American soldiers, three Black Hawk helicopters, and two Apache gun ships, the senator celebrated the “progress” and “good news” in Iraq. What was meant as a photo op to prove to the world that the media coverage of Iraq wrongly portrays it as a nation decrepit with violence was shunted when images of McCain in a bulletproof vest and army entourage appeared in every major newspaper.

The press quickly dubbed the moment as the “Dukakis-in-the-tank- photo op”

Once the favorite for the Republican nomination, McCain has slipped into a distant third in the polls and in fund raising. His decision to be the candidate that supports an escalation to the war has just been memorialized by a photo that will surely haunt him on the campaign trail (think: heuristics).

It’s worth noting that on the day after McCain’s stroll, 21 of the Shorja market’s merchants were ambushed and killed.

I think it encumbant upon the next president of the United States to get this country moving again, to get our economy moving again, to set before the American people its goals, its unfinished business, and throughout the world apoint the best people who we can get, ambassadors who can speak the language, not people who made a political contribution but who can speak the language. Bring students here let them seewhat kind of a country we have. We should not regard them as pawns in the war on terror; we should identify ourselves with them. Why havent we identified ourselves with the people of Africa and the middle east. I believe that this party, the republican party has stood still for years. It has opposed many programs for housing, minimum wage intended to foster economic growth. I believe that if we can get a party which believes in movement, in moving ahead; we can reestablish our position in the world, strong defense, strong in economic growth, justice for our people, gaurantee of constitutional rights so the people will believe that we practice what we preach, and then around the world, we should try to restablish the atmosphere which existed in latin america at the time of Franklin Roosevelt. He was a good neighbor in latin america because he was a good neighbor in the United States, because they saw us as a society that was compassionate, cared about people, that was moving this country ahead. I believe it the next presidents responsibility to try to warn the American people that at this crucial time we can no longer afford to stand still. We can no longer afford to be second best. I want people all over the world to look to the United States again, to feel that we're on the move, to feel that our high noon is in the future. I want mister Ahmedinejad to know that a new generation of Americans have now taken over in the United States, and they're going to put this country back to work again. I don't believe that there is anything that this country can not do. I do not believe that there is any burden of any responsibility that any american would not assume to protect his country, to protect our security, to advance the cause of freedom, and I believe it encumbant upon us now to do that. Franklin Roosevelt said in 1936 that that generation of americans had a rendevue with destiny. i believe in 2008, 9 , 10 we have a rendevue with destiny, and i believe it encumbant upon us to be the defenders of the United States and the defenders of freedom. To do that, we must give this country leadership and we must get America moving again.

We can not do this if we have an inferiority complex, we can not keep on believing that we are second. We are first in science, in space, and agriculture, and we are going to move further ahead.

McCain never had a real shot any ways. The winner of this upcoming election will be someone that promises to get the troops out and does it. The best shot at this will be a democratic candidate and most likely either Obama, whose been against the Iraq war from the start, or Clinton. HOpefully its one of them so the troops can come home and no longer waste their time there.

Mac, are you saying that preventing a civil war from escalating to a genocide is a waste of time?

John,

McCain and Obama "slipped" when they said the lives have been wasted....With due respect to the military...if the war never happened hundreds of thousands of people are still alive and America is in NO more danger that we are in now....TIME TO COME HOME DUDE

It's only relatively new to the modern world. A: Hoodia Gordonii is a spiny, bitter, and succulent aloe plant that resembles a cactus which grows in the Kalahari Desert of Southern Africa. It's also quite difficult to grow; in addition to the required four to five years waiting time, it also requires very high temperatures to grow. Orovo diet pills promise similar results, and these are a widely popular pill on the market.
